Photographer Lena Shkoda captures the beauty and mystery of The Martha Graham Dance Company’s interpretation of the Narcissus Legend in ECHO.

A flutter of fabric.

The shuffle of slippered feet across a worn, wooden floor.

Mute it and you will open yourself to the flow.  Blur your eyes and you may see a bit more.

In the West Village, the floor of the Martha Graham Dance Studio plays the role of a blank canvas: It is awakened each day by the movement of the company’s dancers and made bare again each night by the closing of the lights – and the dancers’ dispersal.

Each day brings new possibility – Modern dance serves as a conduit for expressing complex inner and interpersonal spaces – spaces that sometimes there simply are no words for.

At Spirit & Flesh, we were fortunate enough to add the sounds of our camera shutters to the delicate hum of rehearsal.
