Swedish brothers Jakob and Petter Paulin create watches with cases made in one of the world’s hardest metals with customized movements from Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier. All in close collaboration with one of the world’s absolute top watchmakers.

After decades of experience in separate fields, Jakob reached out to Petter with his idea. Oskar Pascal was born with a clear vision of the strength in a process where design and technical development progress seamlessly in parallel. All the way, with no compromises. Two brothers – an engineer and a designer.

The Oskar Pascal name is a combination of Jakob’s middle name Oskar, and Pascal which is the unit for pressure and mechanical tension. A tribute to the unique quality and strength of the material.

ZR01 is an amorphous alloy based on zirconium and is considered one of the hardest metals in the world. The metal has a hardness of 483 on the Vickers scale, three times harder than stainless steel. This is why the individually numbered first edition is limited to 483 watches. OP483 is the only watch ever crafted in ZR01.

Uncompromising perfection is the motivation for both brothers. They say that they are possessed by a perfect result, claiming that being possessed, you have long ago passed the earlier stages of being extremely interested, devoted and supernerdy.

HISTORY

Before 12 years of age, Jakob Paulin made a wind power station in his parents’ yard, built an electric car and constructed a code lock for his room. He has continued along the same path and his latest ideas involve modular technology and the hardest watch case in the world.

Petter Paulin is equally experienced in his line of work which revolves around design. He has worked as a senior designer and art director for 20 years at some of Sweden’s major advertising agencies.

Now the watch is a reality after four years of planning and development! Jakob and Petter have worked uncompromisingly on every detail, with exceptional persistence. They have been in contact with the foremost experts in every area, never leaving anything to chance and never let anything less than perfect pass. After years of research and travels to Switzerland, they have found the best collaborators for every part of the watch.

THE WATCH

The watch case is 3D-printed in ZR01, the same metal NASA uses in mirrors for satellites in space. After 3D-printing, the cases are sent to La Chaux-de-Fonds for CNC machining with extreme precision. The ultra-hard case is then polished eight times for a mirror finish and unprecedented scratch resistance. The Deep Silver and Space Grey models have a satin finish and the dark model is treated with DLC and is finally anti-fingerprint sealed.

Cyrano Devanthey, watchmaker and movement constructor with a worldwide reputation, has engineered the inside of the case and different parts of the link system.

Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier, one of the world’s most prestigious manufacturers of mechanical movements in high-end watchmaking, produces customized movements.

OP483 introduces Pods – a new category of wearable technology. Pods are equipped with individual technology and can be added or interchanged. At the official launch, two Pods are available. The first one, a compass, is compact and attractive like a piece of jewelry. The Francis Barker NATO Survival Compass is designed with military specifications and can be swallowed if the wearer gets captured by the enemy, to then come out the natural way to be used for an escape. Made entirely of brass with a weight of only 4 grams. The other Pod is equipped with NFC – a technology that most of us use daily to unlock doors. There is no need for a battery or connectivity. On top is sapphire glass with a special print.

The modular technology system is continually developed and new Pods will be introduced at regular intervals. Currently a mechanical activity monitor with a separate rotor is under development in collaboration with Jean-François Mojon at Chronode SA, another world-famous movement constructor. Next, a Pod for wireless payments will follow.
