Gustav Klimt’s famous portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer involved a years-long struggle between the painting’s rightful owner, Maria Altmann, and the Austrian government. Over time, the painting had been retitled “The Woman in Gold” in order to obscure the subject’s Jewish heritage. Ms. Altmann finally won back her family’s treasure, setting history straight.
