It was a coup to capture fashion insider Simon Doonan for his Spirit & Flesh portrait; a prolific author and Creative Ambassador-At-Large for Barney’s, this man-about-town’s schedule is full and worldwide. To celebrate The Asylum, his latest witty take on the style business, we asked designer J.R. Malpere for a custom straitjacket stitched up from a Liberty of London print—a nod to the book’s cover art (jacket design by Keenan) and Simon’s signature floral shirts.
Photographer David White brought his formidable vision; hair and make-up artist Jerry Lopez supplied shining personality, and designer David Hart his elegant tartan ties. Eric Vitale skillfully photographed the entire event from behind the scenes.
Commenting on the issue’s “Hunger” theme, Simon held forth magnificently: “I love what I do and where I am in life–I feel fulfilled!”
The book is available from Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and via Simon Doonan’s website.
